The Port Charlotte Hotel is located in the village of Port Charlotte on the Isle of Islay, off the West Coast of Scotland. Port Charlotte is a beautiful and picturesque little village, nestling on the shores of Loch Indaal, the sea loch which bites in to the West Coast of Islay, straight across the water from the island’s capital, Bowmore.
There are a great many wonderful hotels on Islay, it is almost as though this little island is blessed with them, but the PortCharlotte Hotel has to rate as one of the very finest. Whether you are looking for somewhere to stay, somewhere to eat, or merely somewhere to have a relaxing drink and enjoy a magnificent sea view, the Port Charlotte Hotel can meet your requirements and lots more.
I have been to the Port Charlotte Hotel on many occasions but I will always recall the first of them in particular. There were three of us staying on the island for a few days and were doing the usual tourist travels and pub and hotel visits and it was for lunch one beautiful day that we chose to visit the Port Charlotte Hotel. We ordered drinks from the bar and were seated at a table looking out over Loch Indaal to Bowmore.
The menu was extensive but when my eyes rested on the option of the Seafood Platter, all other items disappeared from site. I love fish and seafood at the best of times but decided that as I was sitting looking out over the sea, nothing else would do on this occasion.
I can not phrase it any other way other than to say that I was absolutely overwhelmed when my platter was delivered to me. The portion was enormous and I immediately determined that there was no way I would be able to eat it all. It contained fresh prawns (shrimp,) pickled herring, oysters, smoked salmon, fresh salmon and a whole host of other enticing items which it would fill this page to list in their entirety. I tucked in with gusto and found it to be every bit as tasty as it looked. I amazed even myself in that I manages to consume every single morsel, it was quite literally so good.
I have enjoyed the Seafood Platter at the Port Charlotte Hotel several times since but also a selection of their other excellent dishes, both from the a la carte menu and any specials which happen to be on offer but on the occasion of may last visit, we were there only for an evening drink. As it was a beautiful evening, we sat outside in the spacious garden to the rear of the hotel which leads on to a beautiful sandy beach and enjoyed the local scenery.
The accommodation in the Port Charlotte Hotel is all en suite and all rooms include such as TV, hairdryer and tea and coffee making facilities. Many of the rooms also afford beautiful views out over Loch Indaal.
If you are considering visiting the beautiful Isle of Islay, therefore, at any time in the near future, make time to visit the village of Port Charlotte and the Port Charlotte Hotel – and don’t forget to try the Seafood Platter!
