There’s always a sense of breathless anticipation when entering a hotel room for the first time. Sometimes it’s not advisable to anticipate and therefore expect anything, particularly when it comes to budget hotels. But with the Grand Hyatt, my expectations have never been disappointed.
My first impression of my room at the Grand Hyatt Jakarta was one of vast space. At first I thought I had been upgraded but later found out that all the rooms were of the same size and luxury. Upon entering the room, there is a walk in closet on the left, complete with a safe, and on the right, a marble tiled bathroom awaits, with a separate shower and bathtub and with the WC discreetly hidden behind a door.
A few more steps in and the entryway opens into a room so huge that the King size bed does not appear to dominate. There’s room for a spacious work station, an armoire that cleverly disguises the minibar, a clotheshorse, as well as a large flat-screen TV set at an angle to the bed.
The ambience in the room and throughout the hotel is one of quiet luxury and elegance. Diamond members and those staying on the Executive floor have access to a private check in area in the Diamond lounge, which offers amazing views of Jakarta.
The Diamond lounge at the Grand Hyatt Jakarta was temporarily closed for check in, so the facilities were moved to the Penthouse, with two large, sunny atriums at either end. One of these atriums hosted a complimentary breakfast buffet for Diamond guests as well as cocktails and hors d’oeuvres in the evening.
In Jakarta, a city of regular terrorist threats and protests that could turn violent at any moment, security is of paramount importance. As with most hotels, my taxi entering the hotel was subject to a thorough inspection. The security guards even opening the passenger door to check the interior of the car. All luggage must be scanned before entering the hotel. Beyond these necessary inconveniences, the service at the Grand Hyatt Jakarta is impeccable, with room service arriving promptly and check in and out proceeding with minimal fuss.
Perhaps the only complaint I had was of the food. I ordered a caprese salad to supplement my meager dinner on the plane. While the salad was tasty, the basil appeared to be past its due date.
Located in the heart of Jakarta next to a shopping mall, the Grand Hyatt Jakarta is an excellent business class hotel.
