Applecross is a small village located in the North West of Scotland. The village is in the county of Wester Ross and lies on the coast. This has to be one of the most spectacular locations for a settlement anywhere in the United Kingdom. The area is full of stunning mountains, sparkling lakes and rugged coastline. The village only has a population of around five hundred people but often many people come to visit the village and swell the numbers there. People have been coming to visit this area of Scotland for many years, most people who go to Applecross instantly fall in love with it.
If you are looking to stay in Applecross then you have no real choice. The only hotel in the village is the famous Applecross Inn. This is a simple bed and breakfast with seven rooms. However the Inn is a lovely little building, the staff are welcoming and friendly and the rooms are excellent. The Inn also has a public bar which serves excellent food and drink. Much of the menu is seafood and this is all freshly caught in the area. The food here comes in massive portions and is of a wonderful standard. The bar is very warm and inviting and really is a lovely place to make new friend. Some people who visit the area decided to camp, there is a very basic camp site nearby or you can choose to wild camp pretty much anywhere as long as you are respectful of your surroundings.
The village itself does not really have a huge amount to offer visitors. People come here for the scenery in the area and not the village itself. However there is a basic shop which provides practical goods and also a few souvenirs for tourists.
One of the most wonderful things about Applecross is the journey to get there. There is a very long coastal round that is stunning, but not the usual way to get to the village, it’s also miles round. The normal route is the Bealach na Ba road which is possibly the countries most spectacular road. The route takes you high over rugged mountains and up to over two thousand feet in altitude. The roads twists and turns and give some amazing views, although this is a magical journey it can be very dangerous in the winter months. Often the road is closed due to snow and then you have to drive all the way round the coast.
The little bay at Applecross is beautiful. A pebble beach and a wonderful view over to the Isle of Skye really do make for a great spot to sit and watch the world. There are also some great mountains in the area that many people love to climb, this is really an outdoor paradise for adrenaline junkies. If you have never been to Applecross then you really are missing out, next time you are in North West Scotland make sure you give it a visit.
